Neo Review and Referral Code ($35 Bonus)

4.2
September 4, 2026By CanadianReviews.ca

Neo Financial is a Calgary-based fintech founded in 2019 by former SkipTheDishes executives. It started out as a rewards-focused Mastercard and savings account, but it's grown into a broader banking platform that now includes chequing accounts, mortgages, and a secured credit card for people building credit. Neo also keeps a second office in Winnipeg.

If you've used Neo before, it's worth knowing that the company is rolling out one of its biggest structural changes yet: a tiered membership system taking effect October 1, 2026. It changes how cashback, savings rates, and account fees work, so we've updated this review to reflect what's coming.

What products does Neo Financial offer today?

Neo's lineup has expanded well past the original card-and-savings combo:

  • Neo Mastercard (unsecured), plus the Neo World Mastercard and Neo World Elite Mastercard for higher spenders
  • Neo Secured Mastercard, aimed at people with limited or damaged credit
  • Neo Money card, a no-fee debit card tied to your Neo Chequing account
  • Neo Chequing and Neo Savings accounts
  • Neo Mortgage, Neo's in-house mortgage product

Cards are now issued directly by Neo Financial under license from Mastercard, rather than through a partner bank like ATB Financial, which was the arrangement in Neo's earlier years. Chequing and savings funds are held in trust at a CDIC member institution.

Neo's new membership tiers

This is the part that changed the most. Instead of unlocking better rates by keeping a minimum balance, Neo now ties your savings rate, card perks, and fee waivers to a membership tier:

MembershipCostSavings rateWhat you get
EssentialsFree2.0%Core banking, no monthly fee
Start (rolling out)Free with payroll deposit, or $4.99/mo2.25%Interac e-Transfer, mobile cheque deposit, no NSF fees, Neo Advance access
Build$9.99/mo (up from $7.99)2.5%Credit monitoring, credit builder tool, ATM fee reimbursement
Grow$14.99/mo (up from $12.99)2.75%No foreign transaction fees, top savings rate and limits

A few things worth flagging if you're deciding whether Neo still makes sense for you:

  • The Neo Mastercard is losing cashback on gas and groceries. As of October 1, 2026, that category of rewards moves to the Neo Money debit card instead, which still earns 1% cashback on gas and groceries (subject to a monthly spend cap). Cashback from Neo's merchant partner network is unaffected on either card.
  • New chequing fees start January 1, 2027, but they're waived entirely if you're on a paid membership (or Neo Start with payroll deposit): a $4.99 NSF fee, a $1.50 cash withdrawal fee on the Neo Money card, and a $1 fee per Interac e-Transfer, all $0 with membership.
  • Neo Advance is coming soon, a 0% interest cash advance tied to your Neo Chequing account, meant to help with short-term cash flow and build credit history through repayment.
  • You can no longer get a paid membership for free just by holding a large savings balance (with one exception: Neo World Elite Mastercard holders still get Build for $0).

None of this makes Neo a bad option, but it does mean the "free rewards card with no strings" pitch from a couple of years ago has shifted toward a membership model, similar to what a few other Canadian fintechs have done.

Is Neo Financial safe?

Neo Chequing and Neo Savings funds are ultimately held in trust at a CDIC member institution, so eligible deposits are insurable up to the applicable CDIC limit. Neo's Mastercards are issued directly by Neo under license from Mastercard International.

As with any digital-first bank, your account security also depends on you: use a strong, unique password, turn on any available two-factor authentication, and review your transaction notifications regularly.

Neo referral program

Neo's referral offer provides up to $35 in reward cash when an eligible new customer signs up through a referral and is approved, typically split between the Neo Mastercard and the Neo Chequing or Money account. The current code for this review is E6B8C9Y7. As with most fintech referral programs, the exact split and total amount can change, so confirm the offer shown at signup before applying.

Neo Financial verdict

Neo is still a solid pick for Canadians who want a mobile-first bank with no mandatory fees, and the Essentials tier keeps that promise: free chequing, 2% savings, and gas/grocery cashback through the Neo Money card. Where it gets more complicated is the Mastercard, which is trading rewards for credit-building tools as Neo leans harder into memberships and Neo Advance.

If you're mainly after a no-fee cashback card for everyday gas and grocery spending, that reward is moving to the debit side of Neo's product line, so it's worth comparing against a straightforward cashback credit card elsewhere. If you want a bank that also helps you build credit and access short-term cash flow, Neo's new direction is arguably more useful. Taking both sides into account, Neo earns a 4.2/5 from CanadianReviews.ca, down slightly from our previous rating to reflect the reduced Mastercard rewards.

Bottom line
4.2

A capable digital bank that's shifting from a rewards-first card toward a membership model built around credit access and savings tiers.
